Winning the Netflix Prize

Fascinating NY Times write-up about the $1 million Netflix Prize and how engineers around the world are trying to fine tune complex computer algorithms to win the jackpot.

Later on, it evolves into a brilliant discussion about the nature of recommendation engines and why social networking tools may overtake computer-based reasoning in the future.

This article led me to investigate the most polarizing movies from the Netflix data. According to calculations from Benji Smith on this thread in the Netflix Prize Message Boards, these are the most polarizing movies ever. You either really loved or hated these.

I find this list incredibly accurate since two of my favorite movies of all time are #1 and #2. Both of which I’ve watched about a dozen times total. Atleast 4 others I’ve seen multiple times and really enjoyed as well.
